Raising Awareness of LGBT people’s experience of domestic abuse

Survivor Stories

Survivor Stories

People talking about their own experiences of domestic abuse are invaluable in helping service providers to understand what experiencing domestic abuse is really like. The voices of LGBT people who have experienced domestic abuse have rarely been heard.

Survivors of domestic abuse will likely have had a range of different experiences and everyone copes with the abuse that they experienced differently.

How individuals feel after leaving an abusive relationship again can vary from person to person. These survivor stories are written by real people who did seek support and were able to leave an abusive relationship. You may recognise yourself in some of their stories.

It is important to remember that they are survivors of domestic abuse. You too can get the help and support you need.

While we are gathering case studies from Scottish LGBT people who have experienced domestic abuse, ACON's same-sex domestic abuse project from New South Wales in Australia has kindly agreed that we can use some case studies from their site.  Whilst these are not specifically Scottish experiences, they do parallel the experiences of LGBT survivors of domestic abuse in Scotland.
