Understanding LGBT people’s experience of domestic abuse

Is It Domestic Abuse?

Is It Domestic Abuse?

Domestic abuse is rarely discussed in the LGBT community therefore it can be difficult to identify whether or not you are experiencing domestic abuse.

Sometimes it is difficult to determine whether or not you are experiencing domestic abuse. Often an abusive partner will make excuses for their behaviour and even blame you for their behaviour.

They may also make light of the abuse or tell you that this is what it is like to be in an LGBT relationship leaving you feeling confused. This is how they want you to feel. You never deserve to be abused and you are never to blame for the abuse.

Domestic abuse is rarely discussed in the LGBT community thus you may not have considered that it happens in LGBT couples. The following pages highlight some of the behaviour abusers may use. The list is by no means exhaustive. Abusers can find many different ways to control you and you may experience something which is not listed here. This may still be domestic abuse.
