Children & Young People

This section has some signposts to support for children and young people. It also discusses some of the issues around children and young people that affect LGBT people experiencing domestic abuse.

Children & Young People

Children and Young people experiencing domestic abuse within an LGBT family will be affected in much the same way as any other child or young person living with domestic abuse.

Children whose parent or care giver is experiencing domestic abuse will always respond better to support when it is supportive of that parent/care giver and does not blame them for the domestic abuse.

This includes not only being supportive of their parent’s experience of domestic abuse but also recognising that there may be particular barriers or issues because their parent identifies as L, G, B      or T.

It is therefore important that when providing support that the child's parent's sexual orientation or gender identity is positively acknowledged, where appropriate. For example, ensure during support that the child or young person feels safe to come out about their mum or dad.
